A move-out clean works best when it fits between removals, any necessary repairs and the final handover. This timeline helps Canberra renters organise those dependencies without assuming that every property needs the same number of days.
While planning the move
Find the condition report and ask for the property-specific exit checklist. Identify the final inspection date, key-return arrangements and the last day you can provide access. Check lease or tenancy questions with the appropriate adviser rather than relying on a cleaning booking to decide your obligations.
The ACT Government’s ending-a-tenancy information is a useful starting source. Keep it alongside the property records and your moving plan so cleaning tasks do not get confused with damage, wear and tear or other tenancy matters.
Before booking the final clean
List the bedroom and bathroom count, condition and any extras. Tell Dustate whether carpets, external windows, a balcony or garage are required. Provide the removalist date and any remaining trade work so the visit is not scheduled before access is realistically available.
The end-of-lease guide explains the cleaning scope. Carpet steam cleaning and external windows are separately quoted; do not assume they are included because the booking is called a vacate clean.
Use a dependency-based timeline
| Stage | What to complete | What to confirm next |
|---|---|---|
| Packing underway | Sort belongings and identify repairs | Removalist and trade sequence |
| Main belongings removed | Clear rooms and check forgotten storage | Final-clean access and utilities |
| Approved repairs complete | Allow required curing or settling time | Whether further dust or residue remains |
| Final cleaning | Complete the agreed rooms and extras | Completion check and any concerns |
| Handover | Retain records and return keys as arranged | Any follow-up through the proper contact |
This sequence is a planning aid, not a promise that the whole process fits into a particular day. Allow for building lift bookings, access hours, drying requirements and the cleaner’s confirmed availability.
Keep utilities and access working
Check that electricity and water will remain available during the booked service. Confirm parking, lift access, gate codes and who holds the keys. Share sensitive access details privately with the authorised contact, not in a public moving checklist.
Empty the areas included in the quote where possible. Cupboards still packed with belongings cannot be cleaned as though vacant. Tell the cleaner about anything that cannot be moved and agree the limitation before the visit.
Avoid creating fresh work after the clean
Where practical, finish dust-producing repairs and removalist activity first. If a trade must return afterwards, ask which areas may need another clean and who will arrange it. A second visit is not automatically included in the original booking.
If carpet extraction is booked, ask for site-specific drying and access advice before scheduling furniture replacement or final inspection. Do not assume the floor will be ready at a fixed hour regardless of weather, ventilation and condition.
Check the result before the final handover
Compare completed work with the written scope. Take clear, relevant photographs and keep the invoice or completion record. Identify a specific missed cleaning item rather than sending a general message that the property is “not ready”.
Dustate’s rework promise concerns the agreed cleaning scope. Raise any relevant issue within 72 hours of the clean completing, and give Dustate the opportunity to remedy it under the rework terms. The promise is not a bond refund guarantee and does not include unrelated damage or new mess created after the clean.
Build your handover plan
Send Dustate the vacate date, removalist timing, property details and extras through the end-of-lease service. Request a written quote and a confirmed visit that fits the moving sequence.

FAQs
Should I book before the removalist arrives?
You can arrange the booking early, but the final clean is usually easier after belongings and removalist work are out of the agreed areas. Confirm the actual access plan with the cleaner.
What if the inspection date changes?
Contact Dustate as soon as possible. Availability, access and any revised service date need agreement; do not assume a booking can move automatically.
