Illustrated Dustate guide: Preparing Windows, Tracks and Flyscreens for a Professional Clean

Good preparation makes a window-cleaning visit easier without asking you to do the cleaning first. This checklist is for Canberra households arranging glass, track or screen work and wanting to avoid access surprises on the day.

Confirm what you have actually booked

Check whether the quote covers internal glass, external glass or both, then look for tracks, sills, frames and flyscreens. These components are not interchangeable. A screen that can be lifted out easily is different from a fixed security screen or one with brittle clips.

Dustate’s window cleaning guide explains the scope and starting prices. Use it to check the quote, then tell the cleaner about anything that has changed since the photos were taken, such as newly installed furniture or a window that no longer opens.

Clear a useful working space

Move small personal items from the sill and the floor immediately beside the window. Put paperwork, chargers and fragile ornaments somewhere away from splashes and foot traffic. Leave a clear route between rooms so equipment does not need to pass over loose belongings.

Heavy furniture needs a separate conversation. Do not move something beyond your ability or assume that the cleaner can lift a wardrobe or disconnect a desk. Identify the obstruction before booking and agree which surfaces can be reached safely. A photograph of the whole room corner is often more useful than a close-up of the glass.

Leave awkward screens and hardware alone

Tell Dustate which screens are removable, fixed, locked or already damaged. If you do not know how a screen comes out, leave it in place. Forcing clips can bend a frame or tear mesh, turning a cleaning booking into a repair problem.

ComponentHelpful preparationInformation to disclose
FlyscreenKeep it in place unless removal is agreedLoose mesh, brittle clips or a bent frame
Security screenConfirm any keys and access rulesFixed fittings or restricted opening
Sliding trackRemove loose personal items nearbyStiff movement or existing hardware faults
Internal sillClear ornaments and paperworkFlaking paint or moisture damage

Cleaning does not fix a faulty latch, replace mesh or repair a failed window seal. Ask for any maintenance concern to be kept separate from the cleaning scope.

Plan for pets, curtains and privacy

Keep pets in a comfortable area away from doors and the work zone, and tell the cleaner how that arrangement works. Raise or draw back curtains only where you can do so normally from the floor. Mention delicate blinds or cords that need special handling.

You can also identify rooms that must stay closed or a work call that cannot be interrupted. Agree a practical order before the visit. A cleaner can plan around a known restriction more easily than a locked room discovered at the end of the booking.

Check external access from the ground

Unlock the agreed gate, remove small loose obstacles and explain parking arrangements. Tell us about slopes, balcony restrictions, narrow passages or work occurring next door. Do not climb, lean out or enter an unsafe area to prepare access photographs.

If another contractor will be sanding, painting or pressure washing near the windows, disclose the timing. The order may need changing so fresh debris or splashes do not undo the clean. Construction residue needs separate assessment rather than being added to an ordinary glass clean on arrival.

Your short checklist for the day

  • Have the written scope and access instructions available.
  • Clear small belongings from the agreed areas.
  • Identify existing damage and surfaces to avoid.
  • Confirm the pet arrangement and any private rooms.
  • Keep keys or a contact available for access questions.
  • Leave heavy lifting and awkward screen removal for prior discussion.

FAQs

Do I need to clean the tracks first?

No. Describe their condition and confirm that track cleaning is included. Preparation means access and clear information, not completing the booked task yourself.

What if a window cannot be reached on the day?

Ask the cleaner to explain the access issue and agree any scope change before additional work proceeds. Avoid improvised access or an assumption that a different method is automatically included.
