There is no single gutter-cleaning interval that suits every Canberra home. Use the trees, debris and drainage behaviour at your property to plan checks, then arrange safe clearing before a problem becomes urgent.
Start with the property’s history
Record when the gutters were last cleared and what was removed. A roof beside mature trees may collect debris differently from an exposed roof with few nearby branches. Note whether one valley or corner fills first, whether gutter guards are fitted and whether water has overflowed during rain.
These observations make the next booking more useful. “The rear corner above the laundry overflowed after the last windy day” tells a cleaner more than “the gutters are probably due”. Observe from the ground; do not use a storm as a reason to climb or work beside flowing water.
A practical seasonal routine
| Checkpoint | What to look for from the ground | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| After noticeable leaf fall | Debris at roof valleys or gutter edges | An access-assessed clearing quote |
| After strong winds, once conditions are safe | Fallen branches and newly accumulated material | Cleaning or a qualified trade, depending on the issue |
| Before forecast severe weather | Known blockage points and overdue maintenance | Planned work if safe and available; never rushed roof access |
| After a completed clean | The recorded scope and any reported defects | A maintenance reminder based on actual findings |
This is a planning routine, not a claim that a particular month guarantees clean gutters. Canberra’s ACT Emergency Services Agency advises households to maintain gutters as part of storm readiness; storms can occur outside a preferred maintenance season.
Signs to investigate
Overflow at one point, plants growing from a gutter and visible packed debris are reasons to seek assessment. Staining below a joint may also warrant attention. None of those observations proves that leaves are the only cause: damaged joints, inadequate fall or a blocked downstream pipe can need repair rather than cleaning.
Take a wide photo showing the location, then a closer image only if it is safely visible from the ground. Record the date and what the weather was doing. Send that information with your enquiry so the scope can distinguish debris removal from a drainage investigation.
Prepare before the booking
- Find the previous quote or maintenance note, if available.
- Mark the affected side of the house on a simple sketch.
- Mention guards and any roof sections above extensions or pergolas.
- Explain gate widths, sloping ground and overhead obstructions.
- Ask how debris removal and accessible downpipe checks are handled.
- Arrange a suitable time and a contact for access questions.
Do not remove guards, lean out of upstairs windows or access the roof to help with the quote. Those actions change the risks and can damage components. Safe Work Australia’s heights guidance is relevant to the contractor’s assessment; a checklist cannot replace it.
Budget for the task you need
Dustate’s gutter clearing starts from $260. Visible gutter and fascia exterior washing starts from $230 and is a separate task. Both are AUD starting figures; the written, GST-inclusive quote depends on scope and access. The gutter costs and scope guide explains that distinction in more detail.
If a repair is identified, keep it as a separate decision. A clean roof edge does not certify the roof, and a completed clear does not guarantee that no future debris will enter the system.
Plan your next check
Send Dustate the last clearing date, the problem areas and safe ground-level photos. Request a written gutter-cleaning quote, then record the findings so the next maintenance decision has a useful starting point.

FAQs
Should every property book twice a year?
Not automatically. Use a reminder to check, then adjust the clearing schedule to the debris and findings at your own property. Ask for a recommendation based on what was actually found.
Is a gutter clean an emergency storm repair?
No. Planned cleaning and emergency make-safe work are different. Follow current ACT emergency advice if severe weather has caused damage, and arrange permanent repairs with a suitable trade.
