After-Renovation Cleaning: A Room-by-Room Dust Checklist

Renovation dust can settle beyond the room where the work happened. This guide helps Canberra households plan a cleaning scope once the builder has dealt with site hazards and released the home for ordinary cleaning.

Illustrated Dustate guide: After-Renovation Cleaning: A Room-by-Room Dust Checklist

Renovation dust can settle beyond the room where the work happened. This guide helps Canberra households plan a cleaning scope once the builder has dealt with site hazards and released the home for ordinary cleaning.

Before the household cleanup begins

Ask the builder what materials were cut, sanded or removed and whether any hazardous-dust cleanup remains outstanding. Suspected asbestos, silica dust and other hazardous contamination need the appropriate assessment and controls. Do not assume that a household vacuum with a fine filter is suitable.

Safe Work Australia’s guidance on working with crystalline silica substances is relevant where silica may be involved. This room checklist applies after those questions are resolved; it is not a hazardous-dust removal procedure or clearance certificate.

Map the rooms affected

List the renovated rooms, the routes trades used and adjacent rooms where doors were open. Note whether cupboards were sealed, furnishings were protected and floors have new finishes. Send this information with photos through Dustate’s construction cleaning service.

A kitchen renovation in an otherwise occupied home needs different planning from a vacant whole-home fit-out. Separate rooms that can be entered from spaces still under the builder’s control, and identify any household routines the visit must accommodate.

Kitchen checklist

  • List accessible cabinet interiors, drawer spaces and shelves needing attention.
  • Identify benches, splashbacks and appliance exteriors in scope.
  • Confirm whether appliance interiors are part of this booking.
  • Leave product labels and protective film until removal is authorised.
  • Explain new surface-care instructions supplied by the installer.

Pack away food and small appliances where practical. Do not use an aggressive cleaner to test a new bench or remove a stubborn building mark. If the finish is scratched, chipped or uncured, report that separately from dust.

Bathroom and laundry checklist

Specify mirrors, fittings, accessible tiles, cupboards and floors. Identify grout haze, silicone residue or labels separately from loose household dust, because the surface and curing stage affect what can be attempted.

Check that the builder has approved water use and cleaning on new finishes. Leaks, loose fittings and incomplete seals belong on the defects list. Cleaning can improve presentation but cannot make an unfinished bathroom complete or certify it as ready for use.

Bedrooms and living areas

List accessible ledges, skirtings, doors, wardrobes and floors. Explain whether beds, sofas and electronics remained in place during the work. Heavy furniture movement and cleaning behind equipment need agreement; they should not be assumed part of ordinary dusting.

Soft furnishings may need a separate assessment. Do not book carpet extraction or upholstery work as if it will resolve an unidentified hazardous-dust issue. Once the home is suitable for normal cleaning, identify each item and request any additional service explicitly.

Windows and tracks

Dust can collect on sills and in sliding tracks, but paint, adhesive and cement residue are different tasks. Count the windows and explain which sides need cleaning. The window guide shows how to describe access and components without treating every glass surface as one standard item.

Leave difficult screens and high glazing in place for assessment. Avoid scraping new glass yourself or asking the cleaner to remove construction marks without confirming suitability.

Agree the order and completion check

StageDecision to make
Trades completeWho confirms the relevant areas are released?
Hazard questions resolvedIs specialist cleanup or documentation needed first?
Cleaning bookedWhich rooms, surfaces and extras are included?
Household resetWhen can belongings and furniture go back?
Final checkWho compares the result with the written scope?

A later trade visit can create fresh dust. If further work is planned, decide whether the current booking is an interim clean or a final presentation clean. Any return visit should be separately agreed.

For a formal builder handover, the builders-cleaning checklist sets out site release, task boundaries and completion checks.

FAQs

Can a normal deep clean replace renovation cleaning?

Sometimes the remaining work is ordinary household cleaning, but disclose the renovation first. Residue, new finishes and potential hazards need assessment before a suitable service is chosen.

Will every mark disappear?

No result should be assumed for unknown building residue or damaged finishes. Ask what can reasonably be cleaned and keep repairs or specialist treatment separate.
